Parental support and involvement has been important during the Active Schools process. Parents shared their opinions of PE/physical activity in our school via an online parental survey. We wrote a newsletter and sent it out to all parents to inform them of the different activities taking place and upcoming Active School events. Information is also shared here and via our Facebook page. Parents have also supported the implementation of active homework, assist with school teams/transporting children to matches and participated in our Active Schools Week Parents Vs. Children/Parents Vs. Teachers event.

Our Active Schools Committee consists of both male and female pupils from all class groups and is lead by Múinteoir Caoimhe. All pupils from 1st to 6th class voted for their peers with those receiving the most votes in each class group being elected onto this years’ committee. The pupils on the 24/25 Active Schools Committee are: Cian Flanagan & Darragh Ryan (1st class), Emma Jayne Bohan (1st Class), MJ O’Neill (2nd Class), Alison Carew (2nd Class), Aaron Ryan (3rd Class), Maidha English (3rd Class), Fionn Ryan (4th Class), Zsofi Viola (4th Class), Ava King (6th Class), Emma King (6th Class), Jos Bohan (6th Class), Jake Ryan (6th Class). All children also completed a pupil survey, sharing their opinions regarding PE and physical activity in the school.
The Active School committee members meet with Múinteoir Caoimhe to discuss events/challenges which are taking place, to brainstorm ideas, to plan further events, to share pupils’ opinions surrounding current initiatives and to prepare for upcoming Active School activities. The pupils take pride in their position on the committee and their responsibilities. Committee members are encouraged to be positive in relation to physical activities and to do their best to spread this positivity to their peers.
One of the first steps we took when commencing our Active Schools journey was to contact the Limerick Sports Partnership (LSP) who provided us with advice and ideas. The LSP also linked us with the local Sports Inclusion Disability Officer who provided us with resources and advice relating to making our PE lessons inclusive for all pupils. We received a bank of suitable athletics lessons to use with our classes and also rented Sports Hall athletics equipment from LSP. The LSP also promotes adult classes and children’s physical activity opportunities in Limerick which can be seen on their website – click on the logo to explore!
Pupils in all classes were given the task of coming up with an Active Schools slogan with the winning slogan becoming Cloverfield N.S.’s slogan.
The children were given a week to come up with a slogan and to design an accompanying poster. All posters were collected, sorted and judged with Grace O’Dea’s slogan ultimately being chosen!
