1st and 2nd Class Literacy
Literacy Stations
At our literacy station, we have been enjoying engaging in lots of different activities such as playing 'POP' to practise our sight words, searching for hidden words using our magnifying glasses, and creating silly who, what, where, when sentences using our sentence cards. We have also started our guided reading stations and are enjoying reading in small groups with Múinteoir Caoimhe, working at the writing station, and listening to audio books on the iPads!
Literacy Games
In our classroom, we enjoy practising our focus phonics and grammar skills using interactive resources, pair/group games, and iPad apps. We have also been working on our visual literacy skills using a series of 'If it is not a __________, what is it?' challenges. Our responses have been very creative!
Oral Language
Each week we have two literacy lessons which focus on developing and using our oral language skills. We have discussions based on our interactive Starlight posters and complete the associated oral language activities. We have also been playing barrier games as we have been working on giving accurate instructions. Playing barrier provides us with opportunities to use and develop our descriptive language, to use our listening ears, and to work on our memory skills!
Poetry
In our oral language lessons, we have also been enjoying listening to, responding to, and reciting poetry! So far we have focused on two poems by the poet Kenn Nesbitt - 'Here is the House' and 'My Creepy Costume'. After listening to the poems we have thought about the images that the poems create in our heads (our visualizations) and have drawn them in our portfolios. Why not listen to one of the poems we have been exploring below and see what images pop into your head!
