School News and Updates 2019-2020

Oíche Shamhna 2019!

On Friday, 25th October, pupils (and staff!) were invited to dress up in Halloween costumes and to enjoy some Halloween themed activities during the day as well as a few treats as all looked forward to the mid-term break! As you can see great effort was put into the costumes. Happy Hallowe'en to everyone!

HERITAGE IN SCHOOLS VISIT OCTOBER 24th

On Thursday, 24th October we welcomed Heritage in Schools Wildlife Biologist Tony Kenneally whose presentation about Birds of Prey and Garden Birds was greatly enjoyed by pupils of all ages. We all learned lots about the sparrowhawk and peregrine falcon as well as some of the more common garden birds and we look forward to hanging a nesting box or two in the school grounds. All got to see some stuffed birds and learned how to draw birds, with some very impressive results.

NUMERACY ACROSS THE CURRICULUM

CLOVERFIELD NS is fortunate to be part of a Numeracy Across The Curriculum programme which is a year-long pilot programme aimed at developing strategies for teaching numeracy across the school curriculum which was launched at the University of Limerick in May, 2019.Professor Merrilyn Goos is professor of STEM at EPI∙STEM, the National Centre for STEM Education based in the University of Limerick, and is co-ordinator of the programme. The year-long research and development project aims to develop strategies for teaching numeracy across the curriculum and is being piloted in primary and secondary schools across Limerick and Clare, including Cloverfield NS.Numeracy connects the mathematics learned at school with real-world situations that require problem-solving and critical judgment. For numeracy to be useful to students it needs to be learned in multiple contexts and in all school subjects – not just mathematics.
We recently welcomed professor Goos and Kathy O'Sullivan, UL, to Cloverfield NS, where they observed a Science lesson including lots of Numeracy, being taught to pupils from Ranganna 2,5 and 6. All greatly enjoyed the lesson in designing and making foam rockets.
